In France, the organic sector is experiencing significant growth. In 2018 and 2019, the area grew organically by almost 260.000 hectares. This makes the country the frontrunner in Europe in terms of area.
The total area under organic cultivation in France was 2.548.677 hectares in 2020, according to data from Agence Bio, the French agency for the development and promotion of organic farming. In 2015, that was still 1.314.164 hectares. The total agricultural area in France is about 27,8 million hectares according to Eurostat data. That means that more than 9% in 2020 was organic. France has thus overtaken Spain and Italy. In those countries, the acreage in 2019 (the last year in the statistics) is 2.354.916 and 1.993.236 million hectares respectively.
Consumption is growing fast
French household food consumption increased by 2020% in 3,4. For organic products, the growth in 2020 was a lot higher, namely 12,2%. The direct sale of organic products from the farmer to the consumer was hindered on the one hand by the corona measures and on the other hand stimulated by a greater demand for locally produced products. On balance, sales of direct sales increased by 11,7%. The market share has remained stable at approximately 11%. Grains, oilseeds and dried vegetables were the biggest increasers in sales. Fresh field vegetables also did well. Fruit has not followed the trend.
