Tönnies sells his 30.000 Russian sows

8 September 2021 - Stef Wissink

The German pig slaughterhouse Tönnies sells its own production locations in Russia. The Russian branch of the meat giant, APK Don, also includes a compound feed factory and arable farm. The acquisition price would be $290 million, according to Russian media.

APK Don's pig farms produce about 112.700 tons of pork annually. This makes it number 11 on the list of largest Russian pig producers. The company occupies 12 sites with 30.000 sows. In addition, all piglets can be raised to slaughter weight. APK Don is taken over by the Thai Charoen Pokphand Foods (CPF), which is already active on the Russian pig market.

Exact reason unclear
No information has been released about the reason for the Russian exodus. A spokesperson confirms the sale to the German Fleischwirtschaft.de. At the same time, he indicates that the group will still remain active on the Russian market. Tönnies still has an office in Moscow.

German media are looking for the reason for the limited expansion possibilities. Tönnies intended to realize a completely integrated pig chain in the country, in which its own pigs also self slaughtered and processed† Ultimately, however, this step was never taken. For the Thai CPF, the acquisition is an opportunity to further increase its market share quickly. After the purchase, the company ranks among the top 5 pig producers in Russia.
