Will German pig price finally hit a bottom?

16 September 2021 - Stef Wissink

Although the mood in the German pig market is still bad, some price stability now seems to be emerging. After last week's unchanged quotation, the German pig price is also able to maintain itself this week. Which factors ensure a little more calm in the market?

After the German pig price plunged to historic lows for the summer months in August, the price has now remained stable for 2 weeks in a row. This can be described as somewhat of a windfall after the negative mood of recent weeks, in which there were fears of further cuts. Although it is still difficult to place all ready-for-slaughter animals at slaughterhouses at the desired times, slaughterhouses seem to be experiencing something of a revival on the meat markets.

Meat trade slightly less difficult
The end of the holidays and the start-up of the processing industry have resulted in a small revival in the meat trade. Parts prices have been most stable recently, although they took a small step back last week. Exports to Asia are still far too quiet and ensure ample availability of pork on the European market.

The supply of pigs last week was at a slightly higher level than a week earlier. The average weights also took a step up. 826.935 (+8.000) pigs were slaughtered with an average weight of 97,2kg (+0,3kg).

Clemens Tönnies calls for action
During the crisis meeting that took place today in Germany Market leader Tönnies has once again emphasized that the demand for pork is far too weak at the moment. It calls on the government to provide financial support to pig farmers. According to the company, the entire pig chain, from farm to slaughter, has been suffering heavy losses for months.

According to the slaughterhouse, the weak demand for pork can also be attributed to last year's corona measures, during which no events took place and the catering industry was regularly closed. In addition to short-term financial help, a long-term vision must also be drawn up for German farmers.

VEZG listing unchanged
The VEZG quotation for slaughtered pigs was set at €15 for the third time in a row on Wednesday (1,25 September).
