News Speech from the Throne

'Perspective for farmers, but also housing construction'

21 September 2021 - Linda van Eekeres

Future prospects for farmers are important, but the cabinet also wants to offer prospects for infrastructure, the economy and housing. This is apparent from the Speech from the Throne delivered today.

"It is necessary that good future prospects remain for Dutch farmers, who are so important for our food supply and a vital countryside. At the same time, it is important to map out what is needed and possible to also offer perspective for infrastructure, economy and housing. The government will continue to work on that," said King Willem-Alexander during the Speech from the Throne, which was delivered this time in the Grote Kerk in The Hague.

He also said: "Substantial amounts have already been made available up to 2030 for nature and biodiversity and the reduction of nitrogen emissions. This will also be used next year to make investments in nature development, cleaner stables and purchase schemes."

Some topics urgent
The budget presented by the government today focuses on the implementation of current policy, because that is in line with the caretaker status of a cabinet, the king indicated. "Major new choices for the longer term are up to the next cabinet. At the same time, this does not relieve the incumbent government of the obligation to do what is necessary. Some topics are so urgent that a standstill would unnecessarily put our country behind. The government would do well to take a number of extra steps in the current policy for the coming year, including in the field of climate, the rule of law and housing."

Billion extra to build on
"More than a hundred thousand new homes are being built due to previous financial impulses. The government is making an additional €1 billion available to ensure that construction can continue," said the Speech from the Throne. In the field of climate change, the large-scale flooding in Limburg is a reason for the government 'to re-examine all planned measures in consultation and see whether and where acceleration is necessary'. The shocking murder of Peter R. de Vries was cited in the Speech from the Throne as a new low of an organized crime that is becoming increasingly ruthless and violent. About half a billion euros will be made available each year to strengthen the rule of law.
