Green-hearted investors can now invest in 'natural asset companies' (NAC), or nature value companies. This was announced by the New York Stock Exchange and the Intrinsic Exchange Group (IEG).
Apparently from the idea that everything that is or will become scarce, can yield a lot of money, is the idea of NACs originate. Anyone who invests in NACs also invests in sustainable life on earth and can thus show that he or she is really doing something good, Fortune magazine notes.
Ecosystem Services
The value of NACs can be measured on the basis of so-called ecosystem services, such as capturing CO2 and supplying clean water and air. The areas can also be valuable because of things like their biodiversity and pristine nature. In principle, the more beautiful and special an area, the more valuable it is.
Critics of the idea argue that listing natural areas at best turns these areas into parks of sorts, with their value measured only in a few general metrics.
Influential Support
Douglas Eger, CEO of IEG, is more optimistic. He sees the new investment vehicle as a potentially important tool in the pursuit of more sustainable development. Behind IEG are influential American organizations such as the Inter-American Development Bank and the Rockefeller Foundation.
