Inside Milk

Irish milk production continues to grow at a brisk pace

5 October 2021 - Stef Wissink

Irish dairy farmers continued to increase milk production in August. The long-term growth trend will therefore not end for the time being.

Irish farmers delivered 942.000 tons of milk to processors in August. That is almost 10% less than in July when 1.048.000 tons of milk were still being produced. However, the supply in August is considerably above the level of August 2020.

big plus
At that time, 893.000 tons of Irish milk was still being produced. Production this year, at 942.000, was about 5,5% higher than in 2020. Compared to the five-year average, the increase is even higher. In the month of August, 872.000 tons of milk were produced in the past five years. This means that current production is almost 8% higher than this level.

Good grass growth in September
Milk production is also expected to turn out relatively well in September. Good weather conditions ensure that a lot of grass is available. As usual, with the end of grass growth and grazing in October, milk supply will then rapidly decline to the annual low reached in January.
