EU inspectors dive into dairy chain supervision

8 October 2021 - Klaas van der Horst

A team from the European Commission will visit the Dutch dairy sector next week. The focus is mainly on how statutory supervision is arranged and safeguarded. Recommendations will be made at a later date.

The visit is on the regular work program of the controllers. Last year there was a lot of discussion in dairy farming about the statutory supervision of dairy farming. This is because of the introduction of Koemonitor by ZuivelNL, a private organisation, and the support given to it by the COKZ. This means that the findings are eagerly awaited.

According to the website of the European Commission, DG Sanco, it has been nine years since the last such inspection. This does not mean, however, that attention was no longer paid to the Netherlands in the meantime. Dutch supervision differs from that in many other European member states because many tasks are outsourced to private parties. It is then up to the European Commission to determine what is still allowed and what is not.
