The average price for container shipping by sea has fallen for the first time in months. The Drewry's World Container Index fell 2,2% last week. The average price is $10.129,72 for a 40-foot container. This does not seem to apply to container transport to Europe.
Container transport is therefore still very expensive. Compared to the same week last year, the transport of a container is 289% more expensive.
It is mainly the transport between China and America that has become cheaper. Shipping a container from Shanghai to Los Angeles now costs an average of $11.173, which is 8% less compared to a week earlier, but still an increase of 175% compared to the same week a year earlier. Prices in the Drewry's index have fallen by 5% on several other routes between China and the US. Freight forwarder Shifl reports that spot prices have halved in a month on some routes between the China and the US.
Production is disappointing
According to experts, the falling container prices are a result of declining industrial production. China is also dealing with an energy crisis and the state has therefore taken drastic measures, including the (temporary) closing of factories or stopping the supply of electricity for a number of hours a day. This in turn results in a growing number of open orders that later still have to be produced and transported.
Price container transport in Europe falls
This does not seem to apply to container transport to Europe. Shipping containers from China to Europe has increased in price even further. For example, transporting a container from Shanghai to Rotterdam costs $14.807 or 2% more than a week earlier and 568% more compared to a year earlier.
