In the latest outlook for the agricultural markets, the European Commission also foresees an increase in European pork production for 2022. The export volume is also increasing, but possibly at low prices.
Although pig prices across Europe are groaning under weak meat demand, this has not led to a reduction in production. For the whole of 2021, production will probably be 1,7% higher than in 2021. For 2022, the European Commission foresees a further growth of 0,6%.
Low prices stimulate export
The current low prices stimulate the volume that the countries in the European Union will export. Although volumes have declined in recent months, export volume in the first half of the year was still 14% higher than in the first half of 2020. For the entire current year, export figures will ultimately be 6% higher. Subsequently, the export volume will be 2022% higher in 7.
Much, however, depends on developments in the Chinese pig population. The Commission currently sees an oversupply in the Chinese market as a result of the temporary reduction in pig numbers due to the low prices in the country. Pig farmers want to 'upgrade' their livestock with this. After this dip, however, China will again achieve a higher level of self-sufficiency in the course of next year.
