Pork giant Russia hit by ASF

27 October 2021 - Stef Wissink

Miratorg, Russia's largest pork producer, has been hit again by an outbreak of African swine fever at one of its farms.

It is the second outbreak for the pork producer in a relatively short time. Last month, another location of the company was affected by African swine fever. Both cases were found in the Belgorod province, in central Russia. It is unknown how many pigs were present on the farms and whether they were culled.

Since 2010, Miratorg has been Russia's largest pork producer. The company produces 10% of all pork produced in the country. Last year this amounted to about 522.000 tons, which was 22% more than in 2010. Russian pig production has grown considerably in recent years, despite regular outbreaks of African swine fever. Last year, national production was almost 11% higher than in 2019 and amounted to 4,89 million tons.
