Microsoft founder Bill Gates invests in climate-neutral, organic milk. He does this through an investment vehicle that participates in milk processor Neutral in the US state of Oregon.
Website edairynews.com reports that Breakthrough Energy Ventures has taken the lead in financing. Gates therefore operates differently from many other tech investors from the United States. They are more likely to invest money in vegan projects than projects that involve agriculture.
Organic livestock farmers
How do Neutral Being able to produce CO2-neutral is not entirely clear, but the company is supplied by organic dairy farms in at least five states of the United States. These companies claim to emit less CO2 than conventional companies. This is partly due to extra CO2 sequestration in the soil and manure fermentation. These organic dairy farms have an average of 250 cows and are also family businesses, Neutral reports.
One of the dairy's factories is in Portland, Oregon. The packs bear the short message: "This milk fights climate change." Consumers can also read on the company's website how much CO2 the different types of milk in the range save.
Neutral is the frontrunner in American dairy when it comes to climate-friendly entrepreneurship. Stonyfield Organic, which was sold by Danone to Lactalis a few years ago, aims to become climate positive by 2030, but needs a few more steps to get there.
