Irish dairy farmers are still ramping up milk production. Since May this year, the milk supplies have been significantly above those of 2020. The strong upward trend will also be continued in September.
In September, 802.420 tons of milk were delivered to the milk processing factories. That was almost 50.000 tons more than in September 2020. This results in a plus of 6,5%. The upward trend is thus continued. In July and August, milk production grew by 4,7% and 5,5% respectively compared to a year earlier.
Expanding milk pee seems unstoppable
While many major dairy producing countries are seeing production stagnate, Ireland is continuing its expansion line. This is also evident when the production figures are compared with the five-year averages. Compared to the five-year average production in September, the milk supply in September of this year was almost 60.000 tons higher. That means a plus of almost 8%. The strong recent growth figures do not yet give any reason to think that growth has now stopped.
Expectations were good
The expectations for milk production in September were already good in advance. Favorable weather conditions ensured good grass availability, even late in the grazing season, which usually ends in early October. Production of Ireland's main dairy export product, butter, increased by 2.700 tonnes in September. This brought production to a total of 26.700 tons.
