The total value of live animals exported by Dutch companies in 2020 was significantly lower than in 2019. The export value of live animals shrank by €258 million last year, a decrease of almost 14%. This is reported by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS).
Germany was, and remains, the Netherlands' most important trading partner in live animals. This is despite the fact that most of the total contraction of €258 million can be explained by considerably lower trade with the Germans. After Germany, the most important destinations for live livestock are Belgium (mainly cattle), the United States (mainly horses) and Spain (mainly pigs).
Germany in particular delivers
The largest decline in individual countries was recorded in trade with Germany. The export value of live animals to Germany decreased by €155 million (-17%). The main export flow remains pigs. Of the total exports to Germany of €742 million in 2020, pigs accounted for 70% of this value. In addition to pigs, approximately €150 million worth of poultry also crosses the Dutch-German border. Trade with Belgium (-€51 million) and the United Kingdom (-€8 million) also declined.
In addition to the decreased export value, the import value of live animals also dropped significantly. The Netherlands mainly imports poultry and cattle from Germany and Belgium. The total import value of live cattle fell from €1,26 billion to €1,13 billion. Poultry is the most important imported commodity and represented a value of €2020 million in 601.
