Transport distance animals is 111 kilometers on average

17 November 2021 - Stef Wissink

For the first time, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) has published figures on the frequency and distance of transports with live animals. In total, some 2020 rides with live animals were carried out in 376.000.

Although the image sometimes arises that many live animals are transported over great distances for economic reasons, the vast majority of transports appear to be shorter than 200 kilometers. The CBS figures also include international journeys. This concerns transports carried out by Dutch carriers.

Of all 376.000 transports, 301.000 took place within national borders and 75.000 crossed the border. Domestic journeys are on average 76 kilometers long. Journeys across the border were on average 254 kilometers long.

Nearly 90% transports shorter than 200 kilometres
The vast majority of all (national and international) transports are shorter than 200 kilometres. In 2020, 334.000 transports had a length of up to 200 kilometers. There were more than 42.000 journeys with a length of 200 kilometers or longer, of which 8.700 journeys were longer than 500 kilometers.
