Dairy company Fage from Greece wants to open a factory in the northern part of the Riegmeer business park in Hoogeveen. The factory offers space for about 250 employees and is expected to open in mid-2024.
According to RTV Drenthe the municipality of Hoogeveen has been in talks with Fage since November 2020. The conversations have been kept secret for a long time, according to the broadcaster. The city council of Hoogeveen was not allowed to say anything about it in recent months. On Monday evening, it was decided during an extra council meeting to lift the secrecy. "It is a breakthrough for Hoogeveen," says alderman Jan Zwiers enthusiastically. "Fage is going to build an ultramodern production location for the European market. We are very happy with that, because it will provide employment in our area again."
The company has signed a contract for a 15 hectare site. The factory itself will require an investment of €150 million. The company mainly produces Greek yogurt and has locations in Greece and the United States.
Establishing a company in the Netherlands by Greeks can make sense because a lot of dairy products go to Greece from northwestern Europe every year. Greece's own production cannot meet the demand, especially during the tourist season. The Greek dairy market is therefore very attractive for many traders, but also for a company like FrieslandCampina.
