From land to wealth: managing money independently

7 January 2022

Quitting a farm is often an emotional moment. You simply don't say goodbye so easily to that which is your soul and bliss. It is also the start of another life. Without the familiar activity in and around the farm. But with the care for a power. Pieter Smeenk and René Biewinga – both with agricultural roots – guide you in this new phase in managing your assets.

Taking care of your assets
Pieter has been helping quitting farmers with their financial planning for many years. "I feel very closely related to farmers and the sector. That sobriety and no-nonsense mentality suit me well. I personally visit farmers who are going to stop and offer my help. I do this on a rainy day so that I don't disturb during the harvesting." Farmers who sell their farms acquire a capital. "If you have an asset with the sale of your life's work, you want to use it wisely. Creating peace of mind is therefore the first thing we advise."

Looking to the future
"It's not nothing when you walk down the farmyard for the last time", Pieter continues. "We make sure that we are there at that moment. In the year of the transfer, tax aspects deserve extra attention. After that, we mainly look to the future. Many farmers want to keep their assets as much as possible. They often also have to support their maintenance with this. Together we determine the financial course." "Investing can be part of this", René indicates. "The customer must be open to this, rather I do not join as an asset manager. I tell the honest story and also show what can go wrong. You have to understand that well before you start."

Trust comes on foot
“We believe in a long-term relationship,” Pieter continues. "We understand that trust must first grow. You simply cannot achieve that with farmers by talking via a screen. So we pay a lot of attention to personal contact." René emphasizes the golden rule in contact with customers. "You do what you say and you say what you do. Being honest and open is our top priority. We want customers to take their time and not rush anything." For Pieter, the line to the accountant and broker is also important. "Together, we must ensure that one and one becomes three. And that the farming family also keeps solid ground under their feet in the new phase of their lives."

Many farmers have a love for land and not for money, that realization is essential in our work

A comprehensive advice
What makes private banking at ABN AMRO MeesPierson so special is comprehensive advice. We take all facets of your life with us. From the soul and bliss you have put into your business to the future you envision. And of course the role that your assets play in this.

"If you've stood with your feet in the clay your whole life, you want to talk to someone who understands and feels that," Pieter summarizes. René adds: "Because we always include your entire situation in all our financial advice, we ensure that everything is always optimally coordinated." Finally, Pieter: "It really comes down to the combination. Advice that helps you further because they connect seamlessly with who you are. A farmer without a land is still a farmer. That on a good day you no longer have a company but has assets, nothing changes that.”
