EU feed producers fear raw material shortages soon

8 March 2022 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

The European Federation of Feed Producers (Fefac) has expressed its deep concern about possible shortages of raw materials caused by the conflict in Ukraine.

Asbjørn Børsting, chairman of Fefac, called for swift action before the Council of the European Union. According to Børsting, the sector has found itself in an exceptional situation that calls for exceptional actions. Parts of Europe will face a shortage of raw materials within weeks, he says, so action is urgent.

Measures needed
According to Børsting, food and feed companies should be given priority in sourcing raw materials over other sectors. He also calls on the European Union to relax existing rules regarding the import of raw materials from third countries. He mentions the barriers surrounding the import of maize from Brazil as an example.

Fefac felt positive about the conversation and learned that the Council takes Fefac's concerns seriously. Concrete measures will be announced by the EU before the next European Council meeting in mid-March. Fefac will continue to work closely with parties from the entire chain to identify the most important challenges in order to be able to take concrete action to limit the size of the crisis and the impact on the entire chain.
