Profit for BBB allies in city councils

17 March 2022 - Linda van Eekeres

Once again, local parties are the big winners in most municipalities in these municipal elections. BoerBurgerBeweging (BBB) of Caroline van der Plas did not participate (yet), but the party linked its name to twenty local parties, the 'BoerBurgerBondgenoten'. Most of these parties have gained seats.

None of the allies lose their representation in the city council. Of all the parties that have committed themselves to BBB, only 'Trots Haarlem' has had to give up a council seat (now one seat). Five parties keep the same number of councilors, as in Van der Plas' hometown, where 'DeventerNU' retains its seat. The other fourteen are on seat gains. Liveable Midden-Groningen is even going from one to six seats in the city council. VZ Westerkwartier, which is going from six to ten seats, will become the largest in that municipality together with another party. Enterprising Berkelland will gain three more seats and now has five.

BBB feels empowered for provincial elections
"All in all, the number of seats has more than doubled," says party chairman Erik Stegink. "It looks positive and will certainly strengthen us in the Provincial Council elections (on March 15, 2023.) in which we participate. A number of parties have indicated that they might participate as BBB in the municipal elections next time, but the focus is now on the Provincial States."

Although there have been allies days and Van der Plas and board members have visited various places to show their faces and support the candidates, Stegink believes that the parties have done it 'on their own terms as authentic local parties'. '. BBB continues to provide support to the allies, for example with courses. According to the party chairman, there are also a number of parties that have indicated that they will enter into an alliance after the elections. "I already had one on the line this morning." In the redistribution elections in November, a number of parties are also participating as ally of BBB, such as in Brielle.

Seven BBB allies who were not yet represented on the council have received enough votes for one or more seats. Group Jan Zwerus comes out of nowhere on four councilors in Goeree-Overflakkee, just like HMV in Aalten. Hogeland Lokaal Centraal will receive three seats, as will Colorful Fryske Marren.

Historic low turnout
The national turnout in these municipal elections was historically low at 50,5%. Local parties were voted more often (36%) than in the previous municipal elections. The CDA and VVD are the largest of the national parties, with 11,2% and 11,5% of the votes respectively.
