Brussels does not want to tinker with Farm-to-Fork

17 March 2022 - Linda van Eekeres - 10 comments

European Agriculture Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski left nothing to be desired in Brussels on Thursday 17 March: the European Commission will certainly not abandon the Green Deal and Farm-to-Fork strategy in the context of food security.

Although a final version of a statement that the Commission will issue on food security next week is still being worked on, according to Wojciechowski, it is almost ready. However, he promised to take the input of the MPs into account.

During the meeting, a number of MEPs, including Bert-Jan Ruissen (SGP), expressed concerns that food security would be jeopardized by the Farm-to-Fork strategy. This in view of the war in Ukraine and the sanctions against Russia. Ruissen, together with fellow party member and Member of Parliament Roelof Bisschop, also came up with a last week ten point plan for enough food. Ruissen also suggested replacing more fertilizer with animal manure, now that there is an acute shortage of fertilizer. Annie Schreijer-Pierik (CDA) also asked this in her contribution.

Food security at number 1 European agenda
Other members of parliament urged the Commissioner to continue making agriculture more sustainable. Wojciechowski indicated that Russia wants to cause hunger and that food security must therefore be placed at the top of the European agenda and dependence on imports must be reduced. According to him, that is also part of Farm-to-Fork. "The Green Deal and in particular the Farm-to-Fork strategy will promote food security. We will also reward farmers for lower CO2 emissions, less crop protection, more animal welfare. We will not abandon that."

Good times are coming for agriculture
the greater the food shortages - the more there is to earn
My grandpa earned back an entire farm in 2 years

wouldn't have been a big farm then
1997 and 1998 were good if you had onions in 97 and potatoes from the ground in 98
but that money is now gone with 2 lesser years

I thought it was exactly 100 years ago
Thought it had to do with rapeseed
I forgot to ask
Even around 1998 you couldn't just earn back a farm: way too high a tax burden

You also can't believe that fat Frans throws his plans overboard so much!!! That would lead to a loss of face for that green rascal, so that's not going to happen just yet, is my guess. No, Lelystad Airport; you'd rather not hear them about that anymore [talking about superfluous] because then it doesn't seem to stick on a few tons of CO2 or N.

Nowadays there is a price and crisis law that will intervene if the food prices for the consumer fly out of control. Don't count me rich; you will be disappointed.

We also had something similar in spring 77 (I believe) with the potato price.
Should not cost more than 1 guilder per kg for the citizen.
Then the price went up even more. The difference patched up the government!! Delicious.
