The Netherlands imports 2 billion euros from Ukraine

Ukraine is an agricultural power. There has been a lot of talk about this in recent weeks and that is confirmed by the import figures from CBS. In 2021, the Netherlands imported more than €2 billion worth of goods from Ukraine. Of this, €1,8 billion or 88% consists of agricultural goods.

Calculated by import value, sunflower oil is the largest group with €537,5 million and a share of 26,3% in total imports from Ukraine. Of all crude sunflower oil imported into the Netherlands last year, 84% came from Ukraine. Sunflower oil is closely followed by maize with a 26,2% share of imports. Rapeseed and rapeseed account for 17,1% and 18,9% consists of other agricultural commodities, such as soya and chicken meat. Of the total imported goods from Ukraine, only 11,6% is not related to agriculture. In 2021 Ukraine will be in tenth place as the country of origin of agricultural products for the Netherlands. Most agricultural goods come from Germany, followed by Belgium, France and Brazil. Russia is in 44th place in this list.

In total, the Netherlands imported an amount of €1,29 billion worth of maize. Of this, €535,5 million comes from Ukraine. This makes the Netherlands the largest buyer of maize from Ukraine within the EU. The market share of Ukrainian maize in the Netherlands is 42%. Spain was the largest maize importer in the EU in 2021 with an import value of €1,86 billion. The share of maize from Ukraine in Spain was 27%. Other countries that purchase a relatively large amount of maize from Ukraine are Portugal and Belgium, with 35% and 32% of the total imports respectively. Much of the maize and sunflower oil that the Netherlands imports is re-exported immediately or after processing. Only 26% of the imported maize and 15% of the sunflower oil remains in the Netherlands.
