Inflation was 9,7% on an annual basis in March, reports the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS). In February it was 6,2%. Inflation has not been this high since April 1976. Energy prices account for the largest share of the increase. Foods also became more expensive.
In March, energy (electricity, gas and district heating) was 157% more expensive than in the same month a year earlier. In February this was 77% on an annual basis. The price development of energy is measured by Statistics Netherlands on the basis of new contracts. The statistical office is currently conducting research into how the energy prices that are paid can be better taken into account.
Fuels also had an increasing effect on inflation. Prices rose by 36,5% in March compared to a year earlier. In February, that increase was 24%. Foods have become more expensive as a result, especially meat and vegetables. Foods were 6,2% more expensive last month than last year. In February it was 4,9%.

In addition to the Dutch consumer price index (CPI), there is the harmonized index, which is used to measure inflation in the eurozone. In the first estimate, Dutch inflation was 11,9%, which has been adjusted to 11,7%. Inflation in the eurozone rose from 5,9% in February to 7,5% in March, the highest inflation ever recorded in the eurozone.
