The prices for compound feed exploded in April. This is apparent from the latest figures from Wageningen University and Research. Pig feeds are now almost 25% more expensive than at the beginning of the year.
The conflict in Ukraine already caused compound feed prices to rise in March. In April, however, the price increase is even greater. On average, cattle, pig and poultry feeds increase in price between €4 and €5 per 100 kilos. Further price increases are also on the horizon now that prices for various commodities continue to rise after a short period of stabilisation.
Records further tightened
The price of Standard Chunk A rose from €33 per 100 kilos in March to €37,25 per 100 kilos in April. Protein-rich chunk B had a thickness of €4,35 per 100 kilos and was on average €39,10 per 100 kilos in April. Maize core chunks for silage became about €3,75 per 100 kilos more expensive and cost €51,25 per 100 kilos in April. Beef chunks even became €4,55 per 100 kilos more expensive last month, resulting in a price of €39,30 per 100 kilos.
Pig farming is also seeing the prices of the largest cost item rise rapidly. Feeds for young animals in particular increase rapidly in April. For example, baby piglet pellets became €5,45 per 100 kilos more expensive and now cost €52,90 per 100 kilos. Start/transition grain also increased in price by more than €5 per 100 kilos, bringing the price to €45,30 per 100 kilos.
Sow pellets lakto cost an average of €45,80 per 100 kilos (+€4,95) in April and sow pellets gestation is €40,50 per 100 kilos (+€4,55). Fattening pork chunk 1,08EW became €4,75 per 100 kilos more expensive and costs €39,85 per 100 kilos. These are record prices for all types of feed.
Trend: rising
As commodities markets have continued to rally in recent times, the Boerenbusiness Compound feed price indicator for Dairy cattle en Pigs up to and including September on further rising prices for beef and pork chunks. Up to and including September, based on current raw material prices, prices can still rise by 9,1%. Pork chunks may become 9% more expensive.
