With inflation, the Netherlands is no longer among the leaders in the EU

18 May 2022 - Linda van Eekeres

In the eurozone, inflation in April, at 7,4%, was the same as in March. Inflation throughout the European Union did increase: from 7,8% to 8,1%. Dutch inflation fell from 11,7% to 11,2%. Still high, but in March there were more countries with even higher inflation than in April.

Inflation in Estonia is the best, at 19,1%. In March that was still 14,8%. Where previously only Estonia and Lithuania (15,6% in March, 16,6% in April) had an even higher inflation rate than the Netherlands, now the Czech Republic (13,2%), Latvia (13,1%), Bulgaria (12,1%), Romania (11,7%) and Poland (11,4%) among.

In Switzerland, the price level still rises the least. Inflation there was 2,2% in March and 2,3% in April. In France, prices rose 5,4% year-on-year in April. That was 5,1% in March. Germany had an inflation rate of 7,8% in April, compared to 7,6% in March. In Belgium inflation remained stable last month at 9,3%. Energy still makes a major contribution to inflation, but played a less significant role in April than in March.

Inflation according to the European Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) is 11,2%. According to the consumer price index (CPI) that the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) published earlier this month for April, this is 9,6%. This was 9,7% in March.
