The Dutch production of compound feeds has decreased further in 2021. The production of pig and cattle feed in particular declined.
This is apparent from published figures from the Dutch Animal Feed Industry Association (Nevedi). The production of compound feed has been under pressure for years. Although 2021 was a difficult year for many industries, there does not appear to have been any corona impact on the trend in compound feed production. Production decreased by 1,9%, which is in line with the development of previous years. The companies united in Nevedi account for approximately 95% of Dutch compound feed production.
More poultry feed produced
The total sales of compound feed amounted to 11.523.000 tons, 227.000 tons less than in 2020. Pig and cattle feeds were responsible for the decrease. The production of pig feeds decreased by 114.000 tons to 4.076.000 tons. The volume of cattle feed produced in the Netherlands shrank by 124.000 tons to 4.013.000 tons. The production of poultry feed did show a slight increase and amounted to 3.022.000 tons, an increase of 15.000 tons.
Pig feed production now 20% smaller
The production of compound feed for pigs has decreased considerably since 2015. In that year the volume was still 4.960.000 tons. The drop to 4.076.000 tons means a decrease of 18%. The fact that the feed volume is shrinking twice as fast as the number of pigs (source CBS: -9%) is probably due to more self-mixing companies and Dutch livestock farmers opting for foreign feed suppliers.
With the current knowledge, Nevedi states, it is in line with the expectation that compound feed production will continue to decline in the coming years.
