Billions in damage for Ukrainian agriculture

June 22, 2022 - Stef Wissink

Ukrainian economists recently calculated how much damage Ukrainian farms have suffered to date as a result of the war in the country. Not only arable farmers but also livestock farmers are being hit hard. Hundreds of thousands of animals are said to have died as a result of the Russian invasion.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has cost the country's farmers $4,1 billion, according to economists at the Kiev Agricultural College. These are costs that have arisen as a result of direct and indirect factors.

Greatest damage agricultural area
According to the researchers, the greatest damage was caused by damage to agricultural fields. Some fields cannot be sown, but there are also fields that have already been sown but cannot be harvested due to bombing, for example. A lot of costs have already been incurred, especially for these plots.

According to the current estimate, about 2,4 million hectares of winter crops located in the hardest-flooded regions will not be able to be harvested. This alone results in a loss of about €2 billion. There is also a lot of damage from destroyed or stolen farm equipment. The size of this loss item is estimated at €890 million. In addition, the university of applied sciences is counting on around €800 million in other losses at arable farms.

Livestock farming in the country will also be hit hard. According to estimates, 92.000 cattle, 258.000 pigs and more than 5,7 million poultry have died as a result of the direct and indirect effects of the war. Much of the deaths are said to be due to lack of feed, poor access to farms and the lack of available animal health care. The total damage to livestock farms is currently estimated at € 130 million.
