Electricity remains expensive. On Thursday, June 30, the price on the EPEX Spot rose to €322,40 per MWh. That is the highest quotation since the beginning of March. As usual, the price dropped over the weekend, but at €202,42 per MWh on Sunday, July 3, the price remains relatively high. Having now passed the €300 mark again, today the EPEX is again at €308,18 per MWh.

The gas price has risen sharply in recent weeks and that has an indirect effect on the electricity price. The cabinet recently decided that Dutch coal-fired power stations can operate at full power again. This will not lead to a decrease in the electricity price. The decision on this was only announced late, which means that the power stations cannot immediately operate at full capacity. And in addition, the price of coal is also on the rise, although the increase is much less extreme than is the case with gas. The sunny weather of the past week has ensured that hourly electricity prices in the afternoon were significantly lower than the morning and evening peak. On several days the hourly price fell well below the baseload.

Savings
Energy saving is one of the most effective measures to protect yourself against high energy prices. In 2021, companies used the Energy Investment Deduction (EIA) for energy savings worth €2,2 billion, the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) reported on June 30. A year earlier that was still €1,8 billion. The agricultural sector ranks third in terms of investments in energy-saving measures. The LED lighting category had the most requests in 2021. But investments in solar panels also remain popular. RVO also sees an increasing demand for the reuse of waste heat. Although the number of applications decreased, the amount requested showed a significant increase.
