Danish Crown introduces climate bonus

23 September 2022 - Matthijs Bremer

The Danish pig cooperative Danish Crown aims to halve its greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. To encourage their pig farmers to take action, the cooperative provides member companies that work in an environmentally friendly way with a small bonus.

To be eligible for the contribution, Danish Crown pig farmers must have an environmental certificate. The bonus is available from 2023 and amounts to €0,0134 per kilo. The company is aware that the compensation for pig farmers is not substantial. It is a symbolic measure to express how important the cooperative considers the CO2 reduction, writes Danish Crown.

The cooperative may want to expand the sustainability program in the future. In all likelihood, the focus will be on sustainable food and data collection. To help with this, the company is calling on affiliated pig farmers to use their own data program.
