Expropriation remains 'impassable route' for LTO

11 October 2022 - Linda van Eekeres

Ending peak tax payers must be voluntary, emphasizes Sjaak van der Tak during a press conference in which he explains the results of the member consultation. "Expropriation is an impassable route for us."

One of the twelve questions posed to members was how members would rate the proposal to end 5,1 peak loaders within a year. This resulted in an average score of 49,5. 11% of the respondents do not know whether he or she falls within the peak loader group. That is worrying, Van der Tak agrees during a press conference today (October XNUMX). Remkes said in Buitenhof last Sunday that there is a list of the largest peak tax payers, but the Ministry of LNV contradicts this.

The LTO chairman cites another statement from Remkes in Buitenhof. In it he said: "A frame has arisen that five hundred, six hundred farmers have to be bought out, that is not my message." Van der Tak about this: "I think that Remkes has made it clear that sustainable technical innovation and relocation is also a possibility and has indicated that there must be a good stop scheme." According to Van der Tak, members attach great importance to voluntary participation in the context of company termination. Van der Tak emphasizes: "Expropriation is an impassable route for us."

Remkes writes in the report that he believes that the approach for peak loaders should be based on voluntary participation, that entrepreneurs should have the choice to apply proven and recognized innovations, switch to a different business model, relocate or voluntarily be bought out. . But he also writes that 'a deadline must be set for the individual choice of the entrepreneurs concerned' and 'that the government has no choice but to use mandatory instruments at the (hopefully a few) companies that let the deadline expire.'

Cabinet response
LTO did not ask members about their willingness to take action, 'all the more so because it depends on the cabinet'. The members' consultation shows that members have little confidence in the cabinet. Van der Tak indicates that the eyes are now focused on what the cabinet will come up with on Friday. "The cabinet will have to show that they are working on trust. We are really looking forward to the cohesion that the cabinet must bring to the table and the changing attitude towards farmers."
