Who are the agricultural multimillionaires of 2022?

2 November 2022 - Linda van Eekeres

Energy crisis or not, the three agricultural newcomers on the Quote 500 List are in greenhouse construction. There is also an old acquaintance: Adrie Murre (Top Onions) who makes his comeback in position 457. Wijnand Pon (dairy and cattle breeding) remains the richest agricultural entrepreneur, although he amassed most of his wealth in the car industry. He rises from fifteenth to ninth place with a net worth of €2,7 billion (+23%).

The highest agricultural newcomer is in 378th place: Wouter Kuiper, boss of greenhouse builder Kubo, with a capital of €150 million. The other newcomer also comes from greenhouse construction: Hans van der Valk of Van der Valk Horti Systems. His net worth is estimated at €130 million, which puts him in place 440. In 468th place is Jan Pieter Dalsem (€125 million) of greenhouse builder Dalsem, which was sold to an investment company just before the Russians invaded Ukraine. Quote writes from his mouth that Dalsem does not think his entry on the list is opportune: "You are aware of our industry and will also know that it has major problems related to the gas price."

Jan Anker from A-ware makes another huge leap
Jan Anker, major shareholder of dairy company A-ware, rose about thirty on the list last year and is now making another huge leap. His assets grew by 52% to €220 million, from 369 this year to 241. To stay with the dairy: Frank van Stipdonk, CEO of dairy trade Interfood and chairman of the European umbrella organization Eucolait, rises from 222 to 205 His estimated net worth is $250 million, an increase of 11%. The brothers Gerard, Ad and Matthieu Zijerveld of the cheese trading house of the same name also do well in the dairy business. Their net worth increases 4% to €250 million, leaving them in 208th place.

Return for the onions
In place 457, Adrie Murre of Top Onions makes his comeback. Livestock tycoon Hans Buys, who ranked 491 last year, is not on the list this year. The Zandbergen meat family also disappears from the family list. Of the families in the agricultural sector, the De Heus family of cattle feed manufacturer Koninklijke De Heus remains at the top, still in fifth place, with €5 billion. Van Drie of the VanDrie Group, market leader in veal, among other things, follows (from 1,7 to 10) with assets of €9 billion. The Kloosterboer brothers, who sold their eponymous cold storage company last year, have dropped one place in the list to 1,3 with a capital of €16 million.
