Less work, more yield with Rich Soil

28 November 2022

Gradually it appears that modern agricultural methods have their drawbacks. Monocultures, excessive use of fertilizers, plant protection products and weed killers, among other things, affect a healthy soil life, which is necessary for strong, healthy crops.

After four crop failures brought young American farmer Gabe Brown to the brink of bankruptcy, he switched to regenerative agriculture, with a focus on soil restoration and diversity.

In the book Rich Soil Brown tells how he made his business prosperous again, increased his profits and regained the joy of his work. Promoting microbial activity and increasing the carbon cycle in the soil is achieved, among other things, by cover crops and the integration of livestock. This not only improves the health of crops and livestock, but also restores the ecosystem.

Inspiring for Dutch farmers
Although the fluently written, easy-to-read book is 'professionally oriented' and written from the point of view of the situation in the United States, Dutch farmers can also be inspired by this method and translate it to their own needs.

"Rich Soil is the perfect title for Gabe Brown's new book. It's fitting because it chronicles the Brown family's journey toward something new: less work, more revenue. Thanks to their intelligence and perseverance, they have escaped the agricultural model that has failed economically and ecologically. What they have achieved stems from their realization that long-term success is only possible when all parts of the soil-plant-animal-wealth-human complex (what we call a farm) are embraced. The Browns understand that farming should be about fostering life. It has to be regenerative and profitable."
