Agriculture leaves Gelderland's buffer zone consultations

5 December 2022 - Klaas van der Horst - 1 reaction

The Gelderland agricultural organizations are withdrawing from the provincial consultation on the design of the so-called transitional areas between nature and agriculture. The reason is that, according to their representatives, the consultations have 'gone off the rails' and do not take the interests of the agricultural sector seriously into account.

This is in any case stated by the designated representative in an e-mail to the organizations he represents. He also announced his decision in the guidance group, which includes representatives from environmental organisations, water boards and the province.

Leading the way at Tauw
Consultancy firm Tauw has an important practical role to play in the future design of transition zones around Natura 2000 areas. This agency is enabled by BIJ12, the executive organization of the provinces. The organization has spring 2022 first a global guide prepared for the provinces. The bureau now advises further at area level and proposes measures on how to set up the transition zones.

According to the representatives of the agricultural organizations, the interests of agriculture have hardly been taken into account and the balance between the various interests has been completely disrupted. This would have become apparent for the first time with the delivery of the draft sub-report Binnenveld/Zuidwest Veluwe. In more than 50% of the area, agriculture would no longer be possible in the current way.

No agricultural perspective
According to the statement, the sub-report does contain an agricultural section, but that is said to be limited 'to damage calculations and a number of general remarks about agricultural transition'. The outline of an agricultural perspective, proposals to incorporate desired measures into agricultural practice and maintenance of sufficient agricultural land are missed. According to its own statement, the agricultural representation has tried to get this in, but there was no response in the support group.

This is in response to it Boerenbusiness article:

What a great action by the agricultural sector representative (give him/her a bonus) in that meeting. There, the knots are counted and, if necessary, Tauw makes a difference against the bleeding of the agricultural sector. I hope that the agricultural sector representative will be sitting at the table with a clear plan of requirements and will be able to hold sufficient consultations. I would like to know what the revenue model for the agricultural sector or other sectors is in PSN's kadef for that area. Now only Tauw knows that assignment and they are hanging on Van der Wal's string.
PS I was born and raised next to/in the Binnenveld. I have collected many Godwit and Kievits eggs. The nature image remained stable, years and years. Raw manure and artificial fertilizer showed no negative influence. The Grift flooded every 5 years, but it always worked out!
