The phosphate market is slowly starting to run again

26 January 2023 - Klaas van der Horst

The trade in phosphate rights is slowly starting up again. Although at a lower level than at the end of last year, transactions are still taking place at a calm level.

The signals differ on how busy the trade is exactly. In one region and with some traders there is more activity than elsewhere. For the time of year, at the very beginning of the ride, there is more trade than might have been expected, according to a number of traders.

The trade that exists only concerns trade in purchasing rights. Trading in lease rights has come to a standstill, as it usually does at the beginning of the year.
A possible explanation why there are now good purchases, it is heard, could be that livestock farmers have had a good year, but do not have many other investment options. At least not for the longer term. After all, licensing is difficult.
