Organic growers think there is more in the barrel

2 February 2023 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg - 8 comments

The mood on the market for organic onions and carrots is cautiously improving. With onions in particular, growers look at what is happening in the mainstream market with a slanted eye. However, buyers are not yet going to the farms en masse.

The trade in organic onions is running reasonably smoothly. The increasing demand in the conventional market in particular forms a strong safety net for the organic market. The demand for organic onions from the retail is not bad either, although there are differences between sorters. The DCA Indication Price has made a step compared to last week to €45 to €50 per 100 kilos. For long-term delivery, €60 or more is now also included.

Question from Germany
The demand for carrots is also picking up. German buyers in particular are entering the Dutch market. German rinsers who buy directly from Dutch growers generally pay considerably higher prices than Dutch rinsers and commissionaires. The DCA Indication price for carrots varies considerably from €46 to €55 per 100 kilos.

The market for organic potatoes is tough. Traders and sorters are noticing that demand from the retail sector is disappointing. Free trade to fill in the gaps in addition to the fixed agreements is therefore limited. However, growers with free potatoes have confidence in the market and often have €40 as a minimum price in mind. Trade is not yet involved. The DCA Indication price remains the same as last week at €33 to €38 per 100 kilos.

But not from R. Aar. The almighty green lobby, richly financed by the government and the Postcode Lottery (and whining about the so-called agro lobby) wants organic and that will happen. Despite the people don't feel anything for it and don't buy it. But that's how it works in a real democracy................ It's simple, if the people want organic, the farmer will grow organic.

Don't want anything to do with Bio

Bio on clay may well be possible, but on sandy soil with weed pressure and low supply standards
I don't see it yet. It is financially too risky and insecure for that, not because I am against organic because all that spraying doesn't always make me happy either.
