German pig price to new record

15 February 2023 - Klaas van der Horst

The North German VEZG (Vereinigung der Erzeugergemeinschaften für Vieh und Fleisch) has increased the pig price for the coming week by 8 cents to €2,28 per kilo, a record price. It puts further pressure on an already tense market.

In recent days, various Dutch quotations have also made major increases, with increases of 12 to 13 cents per kilo. However, they all remained well below €2,20 per kilo, the level at which a few other German prices had previously been set.

Vion set a price at €2,27 per kilo, but that includes VAT. Adjusted for this, the price would be more than €2,08 per kilo.
That is below this week's DCA stock exchange price (€2,12) and more than 4 cents above the price of Compaxo.

This makes it even more attractive for Dutch pig farmers to sell for export, which means that Dutch slaughterhouses risk missing out on additional animals. Unless they also increase their payout prices and possible surcharges further.
