Inflation will rise again to 5,2 percent

2 May 2023 - Linda van Eekeres

Inflation rose again in April and, according to the first estimate by Statistics Netherlands, is 5,2%. In March inflation fell sharply from 8% in February to 4,4%. Food inflation (which was 15% in March) is declining, but is still high at 13,2%.

At 5,2%, inflation is the same as in November 2021. In the meantime, inflation has only been lower last month (by 4,4%). Inflation for the whole of 2022 was 10%. In January and February of this hair, prices were respectively 7,6% and 8% higher than a year earlier.

Food inflation
Inflation in the product group food, beverages and tobacco was 13,2% in April. Less than the 15,1% in February and 15% in March, but still strong. Food prices remain higher for longer, because the high energy prices have a lag effect, explained Cor Pierik, head of Agriculture at Statistics Netherlands, recently added Boerenbusiness out in the studio. "If we see energy prices rising, then six months later we will see food prices rising. So you could also conclude that if energy prices fall again, you can also expect a minus in food prices six months later. "
