Local precipitation needs local information

3 May 2023

Everyone has had to deal with the fact that extreme thunderstorms can cause huge differences. But especially now that the crops are still early or where growth has yet to start, every millimeter makes a difference. Even smaller showers can have major consequences.

"In summer thunderstorms, the amount of millimeters of a single shower can increase considerably, but often due to size or structure, an entire region has to deal with the same shower. But it is precisely the smaller, subtle ones that just give a handful of millimeters in one place, while it remains dry 2 kilometers away."

It is precisely in such cases that a digital rain gauge can offer a solution, says Niek van Andel, meteorologist and co-founder of AgroExact. "Driving a round every day past all the fields where you can get started, it all takes an unnecessary amount of time. A digital rain gauge, or a complete weather station, measures the precipitation with an accuracy of 0,2 millimeters. The data is refreshed every 10 minutes on the app and you can also see the amount of the past hours, days, months or years. Being able to make that estimate from the kitchen table or from the canteen is initially experienced as a great convenience and a great time-saver."

"But it doesn't stop there," says Van Andel, "take the use of soil herbicides, for example. Too much precipitation and you can't go into the field. But working on dry soil doesn't work either. If you know exactly how much it has rained instead of having to make a rough estimate, according to our users, yields benefits in use."

With AgroExact we want to make it possible for every farmer in the Netherlands to have access to optimal insight into the local weather. We therefore have our own network of weather stations and rain gauges, with more than five hundred locations in the Netherlands. That is almost twenty times as many places as the KNMI. But precisely because precipitation can be so local, we are still busy expanding the measurement network.

We therefore give everyone who also wants to view local weather information via our AgroExact App an automatic rain gauge on loan as a welcome gift. We take care of major maintenance and keep an eye on the measurements. Because everyone can view the weather stations and rain gauges from each other, everyone has immediate access to multiple locations of data. More time, less worries and more savings on your resources. View more information? Visit the AgroExact website.
