Vion closes North German slaughter location

25 May 2023 - Redactie Boerenbusiness - 2 comments

Vion plans to close a cattle slaughterhouse in Bad Bramstedt in northern Germany. The meat group is discussing the conditions for the closure with the works council of the production location.

The purpose of the closure is to rationalize Vion's German slaughter network. Due to the ever-decreasing availability of cattle in Germany, the slaughter hooks in Vion's production locations are increasingly left empty. Since 2012, Vion has already reduced the capacity at the location several times, the meat company writes in a statement. About 250 people work in the slaughterhouse. The company plans to transfer the staff to other slaughterhouses. According to Vion, the closure has no further consequences for the North German subsidiary Zucht- und Nutrzvieh GmbH.

Declining German meat consumption
In addition, Vion cites the declining German meat consumption as an important reason for closing. "The intended closure is part of an earlier adjustment in our German branches to bring supply and demand back into balance in the German market, which is under pressure," writes CEO Ronald Lotgerink. "In view of inflation and price increases, social developments and regulations, we are taking measures to reduce production capacity in Germany.

It has long been known that beef slaughter is a loss-making activity and can only be eliminated through the sale of meat and by-products, which means that slaughterhouses without processing capacity are unprofitable whether they are large or not.
You often see that the processing of the carcasses is carried out in branches and that slaughterhouses themselves have to be as close as possible to the livestock farm, which is very important to us here in Brazil because of the transport costs and welfare standards for the livestock. Large slaughterhouses often do not have the time and energy to focus on product improvement or to use small companies as research centres.
A small company has options as part of a cooperative with the entire chain present or/and as a research centre.
Closing small slaughterhouses is not always the best solution, but it is the easiest!

not a bad colum in itself, but given the situation in the pig world, and with which vion also has more to do, you would think more of a pig slaughterhouse than a cattle slaughterhouse from the headline of this article.
