PvdA/GroenLinks largest in poll, BBB loses

20 July 2023 - Linda van Eekeres - 10 comments

BBB lost seven seats in the latest poll by I&O Research, bringing it to 21 seats. The joint list of PvdA and GroenLinks has gained five seats in the parliamentary elections, compared to the previous poll (when they were still two separate parties). The combination would get 28 seats. VVD gains three seats and rises to 25.

Today it was announced that European Commissioner Frans Timmermans is standing as a candidate as PvdA/Groenlinks party leader. This was not yet known when the poll was held, but it did show that Ahmed Aboutaleb, Frans Timmermans and Jesse Klaver are considered to be about equally acceptable as leaders and Aboutaleb is the top candidate for prime minister of the left-wing combination. Klaver has meanwhile made room for 'a new face'.

Outgoing Minister of Justice and Security Dilan Yesilgöz is very well received by the VVD supporters, according to the poll. 75% know her and half of them see her as a reliable prime minister. Substantial parts of the JA21 and BBB supporters are considering switching to the VVD because of Yesilgöz, says I&O Research. PVV is three seats higher than the previous poll and is fifteen. Besides the BoerBurgerBeweging, JA21 is the only party that has fallen compared to the previous poll. The party has six seats, two fewer than in June.

CDA on 5 seats
Profit and loss is a relative concept in this context. As is known, Caroline van der Plas is currently the only Member of Parliament for BBB. 21 seats would therefore mean a gain of no fewer than twenty seats. On the other hand, the VVD won 2021 seats in 34 and they are now at 25 in the poll. It is most dramatic with D66 and CDA. D66 currently has 24 seats and would only have nine left if there were elections now. CDA, which could count on fifteen seats in 2021, has five seats.

If a garden gnome starts to rule the Netherlands, food will be just as expensive as in the Efteling...

Polls are always a snapshot and nothing more than that.
It was to be expected that D66 would suffer a great loss, as did the CDA. I hope that there are parties that will take a closer look at the European Parliament's waste of money, time and energy in their party programme, and that they will also introduce a model for a new and strengthened European Economic Community in their programme.

Let Timmermans go on his face, it doesn't matter anyway.

Just a statement: it is often the case that everything you fear turns out to be better than expected or even a blessing. And anything that you think you know for sure should be a blessing - especially in the long run - can turn out to be quite detrimental.

I don't think he cares about that. Immediately enter the waiting arrangement when the damage has been done.
