Sjaak van der Tak is stepping down as LTO chairman

31 October 2023 - Niels van der Boom - 15 comments

LTO chairman Sjaak van der Tak will not stand for election for a second term as chairman of the organization, LTO announced on Tuesday, October 31. The seasoned director was the face of the advocacy group for three years. In addition to the fact that he has turned 67, Van der Tak indicates that a new political wind in The Hague is reserved for a fresh chairman.

Van der Tak, who was previously active as chairman of Glastuinbouw Nederland and mayor of Westland, has been leading the LTO since November 2020. Things got heated at times during his term of office. In an explanation, he says that he considers it an honor to have been the face of LTO for three years.

New chairman desirable
A tough management position such as that of the representative requires full commitment. Van der Tak therefore decides – partly thanks to his age – to spend more time with his family. "A lot will change in politics in The Hague in the coming months... then a new chairman will be more desirable and effective," he says. The Westlander will officially say goodbye in mid-December.

Turbulent times
The chairman was at the helm of LTO during a very turbulent agricultural period. The sector was still full of the first farmers' protest on the Malieveld - on October 1, 2019 - when new plans were already being drawn up. On behalf of his organization, he negotiated day and night in The Hague to achieve an agricultural agreement with agricultural action groups and the ministry. Negotiations about this collapsed at the beginning of this summer. Partly because Van der Tak no longer saw enough perspective on behalf of LTO.

It is clear to him that a lot will change for farmers and gardeners, but confidence in LTO as an advocate remains. He is still on the list of the CDA in Westland.

Do you know what to do? Make yourself available for this position!!! The task for this post is not as simple as one might think. I am aware that this man has made mistakes and will continue to make them, even though he is no longer chairman. Once again: run for chairman, or put forward someone who you think is better. It won't be easy. These are turbulent times in Dutch agriculture.

I think it should simply come from the LTO members through a vote

It would be great if Jaap Haanstra felt called to pull this cart.

Tjeerd de Groot may soon be an ex-police officer, but he once also milked cows. What you write is nonsense. Maybe someone from the city has the right qualities.

I wish his successor the best of luck, you can never do well for everyone.
The interests of the various agricultural sectors are so divergent that a single solution is no longer possible.

As a sector, you can still go through one door on some general matters, but on specific matters, including at company level, interests quickly diverge.

I have not been a member since 2000, when the LTO knowingly and deliberately squandered the interests of a specific group of entrepreneurs.

In my opinion, Jaap Haanstra would be very welcome.

I think Jan Cees Vogelaar is quite capable of sweeping through this.

I don't care who sits there as long as he stands directly in front of the farmers and not someone wearing multiple hats from, for example, a bank or other company or government
There is no doubt that the importance of, for example, arable farming and livestock farming (prefers to feed their animals as cheaply as possible).

No one is sad about that, it should never have been elected. At the time, there was a secret conspiracy that this man was appointed. The only right thing he did was ultimately pull the plug on that agreement. Not because he wanted to, but under pressure from fellow directors. Jaap Haanstra would be excellent imo.

Better make an FNV chairman, those are ankle biters. As far as I am concerned, the polder of the gentlemen directors is outdated. Rock hard on the barricades, no more endless chatter!

and what has vd bank achieved more than vd branch? yes, his point has been made clearer, but this way support for agriculture quickly destroys support.
