The investigation service of the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority has made three arrests at Vion due to alleged fraud. Three executives of one are suspected of tampering with the tracing of pork.
Vion executives are suspected of falsifying documents about the destination of pork. In addition, the suspects are said to have deliberately spread factual inaccuracies during a recall campaign in 2022.
Dewormer
Research by the NVWA showed that 390 pigs had been treated with a dewormer shortly before slaughter. Sample research showed that the drug was present in too large a quantity in the livers. The meat was declared unfit for human consumption and had to be removed from the market.
Data that the trading house and the slaughterhouse provided to the NVWA turned out to be incorrect. The authority proved unable to assess where the meat had gone. This resulted in the meat of all pigs slaughtered on that day being withdrawn from the market.
Vion response
In a response, Vion said it was surprised by the research. Vion says that deworming agent was indeed found in the liver of a slaughtered pig in July 2022, but it says that this did not pose a threat to public health. According to Vion, the matter had been settled, but the NVWA has now started a new investigation. Vion says it will fully cooperate in this.
