Arla uses residual energy for insect production

7 December 2023 - Klaas van der Horst

Arla Foods Ingredients in Denmark has entered into an agreement with insect producer Enorm for the supply of lactose-free permeate. This residual product serves as food for a newly opened insect factory in Flemming.

This factory must be able to produce 100 tons of black soldier fly larvae per day. Arla supplies fifteen trucks with lastose-free permeate (LDP) per week, a product that would otherwise have gone directly to a digester.

Enormous processes the fly larvae into insect meal and insect oil, both products that can be used in the animal feed industry. The expected annual production capacity of the new factory is planned to be 10.000 tons of insect meal per year.

For Arla, the collaboration is important in the context of the company's task to reduce the amount of waste. The Arla Food Ingredients business unit expects to have 16% less low-quality waste as a result of the collaboration.
