Prices in German agriculture are under pressure

16 January 2024 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

Prices for agricultural products in Germany are under pressure. In November, German farmers received on average 11% less for their products compared to November 2022, calculated Destatis, the German counterpart of Statistics Netherlands. Compared to October 2023, there has been a small increase of 0,1%.

The lower prices for agricultural products are largely due to the extreme increase in 2022. The price level was therefore very high and we are now seeing a correction. There are major differences between different product groups. Plant-based products became on average 8,8% cheaper while animal products fell by 12,3% in November 2023 compared to the same month a year earlier.

Grain is one of the biggest decliners in the vegetable sector. In November 2023, the price fell by 33,4% compared to the same month a year earlier. Vegetable crops such as cabbage and cauliflower became approximately one-third more expensive. For potatoes, growers received 2023% more in November 18,4 than in November 2024. In the animal sector, milk took a big hit and its price fell by 29,5%. The price for slaughter pigs increased by 10,3% in November 2023 compared to the same month a year earlier. Eggs rose in price by 25,2% in November.
