Trade organization ZuivelNL also wants to extend the KringloopWijzer (KLW) to organic dairy farmers. This is stated in administrative documents Boerenbusiness has realized. The discussion about this already started last year.
According to a spokesperson for ZuivelNL, the organization sees that more and more organic farmers are completing the KLW and therefore wants to make the instrument more widely available. ZuivelNL does not oblige organic farmers to use the instrument, but it does make it available. An administrative decision has not yet been reached regarding the Cycle Guide in organic dairy farming.
KLW enforced
In conventional dairy farming, the KLW is an essentially mandatory instrument, because its use is enforced through the delivery conditions. Although not all dairy companies are happy with that. It is in particular the mandatory nature that raises objections. The government also encourages its use because it is a useful monitoring tool and provides insight into emissions from dairy farms.
Eko-Holland wants a different path
René Cruijsen, chairman of Eko-Holland, the largest player in organic dairy farming, says he knows nothing about ZuivelNL's plan. He doesn't see anything in it either. "Together with Wageningen UR and the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, we are working on another instrument. The emission of CO2, among other things, is not measured per kilo of milk, but per hectare. This fits much better with organic dairy farming, which is already 45% less nitrogen emissions."
