The seasonal increase in milk supply continues again in Germany after an interruption. This is evident from data from the German Zentrale Milchmarkt Berichterstattung (ZMB). In week 14, milk supply was also 1,1% higher than in that week last year.
German milk supplies amounted to 2,63 million tons in February this year. Compared to last year, the milk supply has increased, but this is probably slightly distorted by the leap year. Last February, milk supplies amounted to 2,54 million tonnes, achieving a year-on-year increase of 3,28%.
ZMB data reports on the German milk supply for March and April. In Germany, dairy manufacturers took in 13% less milk in week 25 (starting March 0,2) than the week before. In week 14 the quantity actually increased by 5% compared to week 13. This meant that the milk supply of week 14 was 1,1% higher than in the same week last year and the seasonal increase continued.
Preliminary data from the German authority BLE, on the other hand, outline an annual decline in milk consumption per person. This from 46,2 kilos in 2022 to 45,8 kilos in 2023 (-0,7%). Whole milk consumption actually increased by 1,1%, but semi-skimmed milk consumption fell by 2,9%. Cheese consumption is also declining: by 3,3% less, it has fallen from 24,6 kilos per person to 23,8 kilos per person. This coincided with higher exports and lower imports. At 5,6 kilos per person per year, butter consumption was 1,4% lower than the year before.
