Damage caused by wildlife is increasing and support for tackling wildlife damage is decreasing. The Social Advisory Council on Fauna Damage (Marf) already concluded this in 2018. So something had to change. After extensive research, it has now been decided that the compensation for fauna damage will be expanded to include environmental factors.
In 12, BIJ2020, the implementing organization of the Interprovincial Consultation (Ipo), commissioned CLM Research and Advice to explore adapting the current system for compensation for wildlife damage. The goal was a fairer and easier to understand system with less administrative burden, both for the land user and BIJ12.
Phased introduction
CLM proposes to take three environmental factors into account when determining the compensation for damages. These so-called environmental factors are: the balance of the crop, the options for preventing and combating damage and the status of an animal species. At the beginning of this year, BIJ12 wrote an action plan for the implementation for each environmental factor. The new environmental factors are being rolled out in phases and starting with the balance of the crop. A high-yielding crop justifies more expensive preventive measures and this will be taken into account in the compensation for the damage.
