Quality grains makes the difference for pool CZAV

June 13, 2024 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

Cooperative CZAV has announced the pool prices for grains of the 2023 harvest. The quality of the grains was generally good, which allowed CZAV to sell mainly to the food industry. However, price movements were disappointing, the cooperative wrote to members.

The final price for baking wheat in the CZAV pool is €195 per tonne. Milling and spring wheat yields €193 per tonne and feed wheat €188. Malting barley comes in at €220 per tonne in the pool and feed barley at €175. For field beans, CZAV achieved €320 per tonne.

Unpredictable market
For comparison: last year baking wheat amounted to €272 per tonne. The average wheat price on the Goes stock exchange was €196 per tonne last year. Partly due to a large supply of grain from Eastern Europe and Ukraine, the grain market was a real buyers' market according to the CZAV. The cooperative also mentions the role of financial investors who are very unpredictable and are a significant factor on the grain market.

The 2023/24 season was disappointing not only in terms of price formation, but also in terms of cultivation, things did not go smoothly. Some of the winter grains were sown very early and the yellowing virus caused quite a stir. The spring was wet, then it became dry. Much of the wheat was harvested in mid-July. A wet period started around August and that did not do any good to the quality of the wheat that was still stable at that time.
