The excretion of nitrogen in animal manure last year was not 19 million kilos below the 2023 nitrogen ceiling - as provisional CBS figures showed in February - but 26 million kilos. Nitrogen excretion amounted to 464 million kilos. That is still 5,5% above the tightened nitrogen ceiling of 440 million kilos that will apply in 2025.
The excretion of nitrogen from animal manure fell by 2,3% last year compared to 2022, when the excretion was 475 million kilos.
Dairy cows and young cattle excreted 274 million kilos of nitrogen, 1,7% more than in 2022. According to provisional figures from February, this was 277 million kilos. Nitrogen excretion from pigs and poultry fell by 5,8% to 134 million kilos (according to the provisional figures 138 million kilos).
In the final figures, the total excretion of phosphate in animal manure is 3 million kilos below the 2023 ceiling of 150,7 kilos and is therefore approximately equal to the figures published in February. This also means that phosphate excretion is above the ceiling that will apply in 2025 (135 million kilos).
The dairy sector's phosphate production amounted to 76 million kilos, which was lower than in 2002. This is mainly due to the composition of the roughage, Statistics Netherlands reports. Due to weather conditions, the nitrogen content of the silage grass was higher and the phosphorus content lower than in 2022.
