Concerns about silage maize fade into the background

27 August 2024 - Alex Jurvillier

The DCA Indicative Price of spent grain has increased further this week. The other DCA Indication prices remain unchanged this week, but it is certainly not quiet everywhere on the roughage market. Concerns about the availability of straw are still there. This is less true for silage maize, given the favorable growing conditions and the significant increase in acreage.

The DCA Indicative Price of spent grain has increased slightly to €3,50 per percent dry matter. The question is described as good. An insider indicates that, given the strong demand, the spent grain price could increase further. In addition, the first analyzes of the silage grass are not great. This can make spent grains attractive in the ration. There is a good chance that farmers will choose to make adjustments because of the silage quality, according to a supplier. But this does not necessarily have to drive up prices. By-products often move with the soy prices and they are currently under pressure on the Chicago stock exchange.

Cutting maize is doing well
As far as silage maize is concerned, the DCA Indicative Price remains the same at €95 per tonne. The initial concerns about availability seem to fade into the background due to favorable growing conditions. This is due to the combination of sufficient soil moisture and fairly high temperatures. In many places the cob already enters the crop well. Many dairy farmers are therefore waiting to record volumes for this winter.

Not entirely surprising, given the sharp increase in the cultivation of silage maize. A total of 209.000 hectares of silage and grain maize has been planned this year. Last year that was 196.965 hectares. That is 6,11% more. Good for an additional 12.000 hectares.

Concerns about straw remain
Wheat and barley straw are and will remain the most important topic in the market. And in particular the concerns about availability. For those who do manage to obtain straw, the origin varies greatly. French and German arable farmers would hold on to the offer, according to a forage trader, with a view to higher prices later this year. For example, another trader will get hold of Spanish straw. From a historical perspective, the prices don't lie. Supply from Dutch soil is difficult to obtain. The DCA Indicative Price remains the same this week at €155 per tonne.

Silage grass and meadow hay
The silage trade is at a low ebb, which is not surprising given the weather conditions. Farmers can still harvest several cuts this year, so there is a prospect of sufficient supply. The DCA Indicative Price remains the same at €85 for silage grass. The same applies to meadow hay, for which the DCA Indicative Price remains the same this week at €190 per tonne. Commercial availability is reasonable to good.

The DCA Indicative Price for feed potatoes remains the same at €60 per tonne, with little trade. A trader indicates that feed potatoes are not available at the moment, although this is contradicted by others.
