For most months of 2024, New Zealand's milk supply was below last year's levels. The exceptions were February and July. New Zealand's DCANZ reported higher supply figures for July than last year.
New Zealand's milk supply in July was 310.000 tonnes. This puts supply above the five-year average of 295.000 tonnes and the supply of the same month last year (286.000 tonnes). This shows a recovery in supply, as in June was still milked below last year's level and also the five-year average.
New Zealand's milk supply in 2024 up to and including July is lower than last year, despite improved production in July. In the months up to and including July, milk supply this year was 8.908.000 tonnes. In 2023, it was 9.001.000 tonnes.
For now, New Zealand's milk supply is running pretty much the same as in previous years. However, the 2024 milk supply will be above the 2022 level, when supply up to July was 8.768.000 tonnes.
For New Zealand, August is the last month of winter. Usually, as the graph also shows, milk production already increases in that month. From now on, milk supply should show better figures to match those of recent years. The higher milk supply in July increases the expectation of a strong continuation of milk supply in August.
