The prices of pig and cattle feed pellets have increased further in October. Meat pig pellets in particular have become considerably more expensive, but cattle feeds are also on the rise.
Figures from Wageningen Economic Research (WER) show that pig feed increased by €3 to €301,50 per tonne in October. This is the highest level since February. Sow feed also became more expensive, while piglet feed marked time. In cattle feed, Standard feed A increased by €0,50 to €304 per tonne last month.
The higher prices are a consequence of the increased raw material prices. Since September, feed raw material prices have been slowly but steadily rising. Feed wheat (Rotterdam) rose by €20 to €238 per tonne in that period. On the French futures market Matif, a falling wheat price has been visible since the beginning of October due to good harvest prospects, but for the time being this trend has not yet taken hold on the physical market.
Corn is widely used
The prices of maize and barley rose at a similar rate as physical wheat. The price increase of maize in particular is reflected in the formation of the pellet prices. Maize is readily available and also quite favourably priced. That is why maximum maize is used in many rations, writes market bureau Stigevo.
Based on raw material prices, it is unlikely that pellet prices will rise much further. Due to the record high expected harvest in Brazil, soy is not exerting upward pressure. However, the upward movement could continue in December.
